What To Do When You Get Injured At Work

4 Things To Do After An Accident At Work

Nobody wants to be injured at work but the reality is that workplace incidents happen. If you are hurt while at work, whether it is an acute traumatic injury, like cutting your leg or arm on a saw or cumulative trauma injury, like carpal tunnel syndrome, then you may be entitled to compensation.

Legislation exists in the form of the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Acts 2005 and 2010. There are also Regulations such as the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work (General Application) Regulations 2007. These apply to all employers, employees and self-employed persons in their workplace. They set out the rights and obligations of both employees and employers. They provide for substantial fines and penalties for breaches.

If you get injured at work you must first bring an action through the Injuries Board process.  If it is not resolved through that process you may then make a claim under the above legislation. If you wish to make a claim, come and talk to Tallans before going to the Injuries Board.

We’ll advise you on your individual circumstance. An accident at work can be complex with different levels of responsibility. We have seen our fair share of workplace accidents to advise you.

Here are a few things to keep in mind if you are injured at work.

  1. Seek Medical Attention

Even if you think the injury is minor and let’s face it, lots of us say ‘I’m grand’ and do not want to make a fuss if something happens at work. However, you owe it to yourself to seek medical attention straight away in case it develops into something else.

  1. Report Your Injury To A Supervisor Immediately

As soon as you’ve been injured, you need to tell your supervisor, line manager, or HR manager. Sometimes minor injuries can become major ones, so it’s important to tell a senior team member what has happened.

  1. Take the Time To Write Everything Down

Record the details while they’re still fresh in your mind. You may forget vital information so it’s important to write down everything – what lead up to the incident, what happened, were there any witnesses and timelines.  Take the Time To Write Everything Down
