You MUST get the address of the other person involved in road accident. Here’s why and please share.
When you are involved in a road traffic accident, it is important that you gather as much information as possible. Our five step guide gives you five quick things to do straightaway. Step 3 advises you to get the details of witnesses and the other party. Please get their address as well as their mobile number.
A growing trend that we are seeing recently is that people just swap phone numbers and registration numbers. They don’t look for their home address. Many think that if they get the reg number then the car insurance knows who the person is, what their address is and pass it along.
However, under data protection rules, the insurance companies don’t share the address.
So you’re relying on either you or the Gardai to have taken down the home address of the other person. Sometimes if the accident is not major and the Gardai need to be somewhere else, then the address isn’t written down.
This delays the claim process starting – remember you need to have all the information about the accident and respondent (person or persons you are claiming against) before going before the injuries board.
You only have two years to bring a claim.
